Westinghouse pitches the WGen9500DF as “a backup power source for larger homes” that can also power a travel trailer or jobsite. This is the version without a CO sensor: the maker's spec table says “Carbon Monoxide (CO) Sensor: No”. Two siblings share its 457 cc engine and wattage: the carbureted WGen9500DFc (CO sensor with automatic shutdown, 212.1 lb) and the fuel-injected WGen9500DFc EFI (CO sensor, 221 lb, longer published run times, CARB compliant). Westinghouse showed it as unavailable online and left it out of its catalog when we read the page.

Running vs starting watts

On gasoline it is rated 9,500 running and 12,500 peak watts; on propane, 8,500 running and 11,200 peak. The 12,500 W in the listing is the peak figure, available only for the moment a motor starts, so everything that runs continuously has to fit under the running figure. On its own it can start a 1/2 HP well pump, a 13,500 BTU RV air conditioner or a French-door refrigerator on either fuel; for several loads at once, use the largest-motor rule.

Run time

Westinghouse publishes 12 hours at 25 % load and 8 hours at 50 % load on the 6.6-gallon gasoline tank, and 7 hours at 50 % load on propane. The description ties the propane figure to a 20 lb tank. We show only these points and do not extrapolate between them. This is a conventional generator, not an inverter: its output frequency follows engine speed, and Westinghouse's description gives no harmonic-distortion (THD) figure, so check the owner's manual before connecting sensitive electronics.

Safety

With no CO sensor, nothing on this generator shuts it down if exhaust builds up, so placement is the only protection: CPSC says to run a portable generator outdoors only, away from the house, with the exhaust pointed away from buildings. The two DFc versions add the sensor. Our CPSC recall search found no recall for this model.

Frequently asked questions

Can the WGen9500DF run a central air conditioner?
Westinghouse's description says its L14-30R and 14-50R outlets can power “major appliances like the air conditioner” through a transfer switch, but it names no AC size. Our appliance data has no central air conditioner, so we cannot give a yes or no; enter the starting figure from your condenser's data plate in the calculator.
Is the WGen9500DF RV-ready (TT-30R)?
It has no TT-30R outlet. Its outlets are two 5-20R duplexes, an L14-30R and a 120/240 V 14-50R (50 A); a 30 A RV with a TT-30P plug would need an adapter.
Is the WGen9500DF CARB compliant?
No. Westinghouse's spec table says “CARB Compliant: No”. Of the three WGen9500 dual-fuel versions, only the WGen9500DFc EFI is listed as CARB compliant.
Can two WGen9500DF generators be paralleled?
Westinghouse does not publish parallel capability for this model on the page we read.
How loud is the WGen9500DF?
Westinghouse prints 74 dBA with no measuring distance, so the figure cannot be compared with ratings taken at a stated distance, such as 23 ft.
