How many watts does a box fan use — and what can run it?
A 20-inch box fan (Air King 9723) draws 105 W on high, 87 W medium, 65 W low. Which power stations run it, and for how many hours.
1/25 HP permanent-split-capacitor motor. Champion's generator chart lists box fans among appliances that need no extra starting watts, so no starting figure is given.
The representative model is the Air King 9723, a 20-inch commercial-grade box fan. Air King's specification table gives watts and amps for each speed: 105 W / 0.94 A on high, 87 W / 0.72 A on medium and 65 W / 0.56 A on low. The tables use high.
What changes the draw
Speed is almost the whole story: low uses about 60 % of high on Air King's own figures. The motor is a 1/25 HP permanent-split-capacitor type, so the draw is steady while it runs — there is no thermostat cycling as with a heater or air conditioner. Household box fans list their own figures on the label.
No starting surge
The Champion chart lists box fans among appliances that need no extra starting watts, so this page has no starting figure and the fit depends on continuous output alone. On high, the two smallest stations on the site fail: 80 W and 100 W continuous are below 105 W.
Reading the tables
Runtime is at the high setting with nothing else connected; at the page's 8 hours a day that is 840 Wh. Example: the Anker SOLIX C300 record has no maker factor, so the default 0.85 applies: 288 Wh × 0.85 ÷ 105 W = 2.3 hours. On low the same station gives 288 × 0.85 ÷ 65 = 3.8 hours.
Power stations that can run it
Pass = continuous output ≥ 105 W. Runtime = capacity × maker's factor ÷ 105 W, nothing else plugged in. Method.
