How many watts does a 50-pint dehumidifier use — and what can run it?

A 50-pint dehumidifier (Frigidaire FHDD5033Y1) is listed at 470 W; no starting figure is published. Which power stations and generators can run it.

Compressor load. No starting watts published by Frigidaire and no dehumidifier row on the Champion chart, so starting_w is not published. ENERGY STAR lists 520 kWh/yr for this model; avg_w is left empty because that yearly figure does not state how many hours of running it assumes.

The representative model is the Frigidaire FHDD5033Y1, a 50-pint dehumidifier. Frigidaire's product page lists "Watts: 470" and also "Amps: 8.8" at 115 V. Those disagree — 8.8 A × 115 V is about 1,012 W — and the page does not explain the difference. The site uses 470 W, which means the tables may be optimistic if your unit draws closer to the amp figure.

What changes the draw

A dehumidifier is a small refrigeration system plus a fan. The compressor runs while the humidistat calls for drying and stops when the room reaches the set humidity, so a damp basement in summer keeps it running far longer than a dry room. The page assumes 12 hours of running a day, 5,640 Wh at 470 W. ENERGY STAR's 520 kWh a year exists, but without the hours it assumes it cannot be turned into an hourly average.

Starting draw: not published

The compressor motor draws a short burst above its running current every time it starts. Neither Frigidaire nor the Champion chart gives a figure, so the fit tables skip the peak check. A station that passes here on continuous output alone, such as the 500 W Goal Zero Yeti 500, is passing with no margin known for the start.

Reading the tables

Runtime assumes the compressor never stops. Example: the Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen 2 record has no maker factor, so the default 0.85 applies: 1,024 Wh × 0.85 ÷ 470 W = 1.9 hours.

Power stations that can run it

Pass = continuous output ≥ 470 W. Runtime = capacity × maker's factor ÷ 470 W, nothing else plugged in. Method.

Frequently asked questions

How many watts does a 50-pint dehumidifier use?
Frigidaire lists 470 W for the FHDD5033Y1 on its product page. The same page also lists 8.8 A at 115 V, which would be about 1,012 W, so the two figures disagree; this site uses the 470 W.
How much energy does a dehumidifier use per year?
The ENERGY STAR record lists 520 kWh a year for this model. The record does not say how many hours of running that assumes, so the site does not turn it into an hourly average.
How long can a power station run a dehumidifier?
With the compressor running continuously at 470 W, the 1,024 Wh Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen 2 at the default 0.85 factor lasts 1,024 × 0.85 ÷ 470 W = 1.9 hours. Cycling with the humidistat stretches that.
Does a dehumidifier have a starting surge?
It has a compressor, and compressors draw extra current to start, but Frigidaire publishes no starting figure and the Champion chart has no dehumidifier row. The fit tables therefore check only the 470 W running draw.
