How many watts does an electric kettle use — and what can run it?

A 1.7 L electric kettle (Breville IQ Kettle) draws 1,500 W. Which power stations and generators can boil it, and how long a charge lasts.

The figure comes from the Breville IQ Kettle, model BKE820, a 1.7-litre kettle that Breville lists at 1,500 W. The kettle puts its full wattage into the water for the few minutes it runs, then switches itself off.

What changes the draw

The element runs at its rated wattage until the water reaches the set temperature. Heating more water, or starting from colder water, keeps it on longer; that changes the energy per boil, not the 1,500 W the station must deliver while it is on. Temperature presets below boiling shorten the run.

No starting surge

A heating element is a resistive load: no motor start and no starting figure, so the station's peak rating plays no part. The deciding number is continuous output. A station rated exactly 1,500 W, such as the Jackery Explorer 1000 v2, passes, but anything else plugged in at the same time pushes the total over its limit. Boost modes for heating loads are excluded from the fit (why).

Reading the tables

Runtime is time with the element on at 1,500 W. The page assumes six minutes of use a day, 150 Wh. Example: the Explorer 1000 v2 record has no maker factor, so the default 0.85 applies: 1,070 Wh × 0.85 ÷ 1,500 W = 0.6 hours of heating.

Power stations that can run it

Pass = continuous output ≥ 1500 W. Runtime = capacity × maker's factor ÷ 1500 W, nothing else plugged in. Method.

Frequently asked questions

How many watts does an electric kettle use?
The Breville IQ Kettle (BKE820), 1.7 L, is listed at 1,500 W on Breville's product page.
Can a 1,500 W power station run a 1,500 W kettle?
By the site's rule, yes: the load equals the Jackery Explorer 1000 v2's 1,500 W continuous rating, so it passes — with no room for anything else at the same time.
How long can a power station run a kettle?
For the Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 (1,070 Wh) at the default 0.85 factor: 1,070 × 0.85 ÷ 1,500 W = 0.6 hours of heating. A kettle runs only minutes per boil; how many boils that covers depends on how much water you heat.
