How many watts does a PS5 use — and what can run it?
A PS5 (CFI-21 digital) uses about 217 W gaming and 44.5 W on the home menu, per Sony. Which power stations can run it, and for how long.
Sony lists 215.7 W (HD) and 217.19 W (UHD) for PS5 gaming, 44.53 W on the home menu (UHD) and 0.30 W in default rest mode. Figures are from Sony's UK ecodesign page; the US page returned 404.
The figures are Sony's, from the PlayStation ecodesign page for the CFI-21 series digital edition. Sony lists 217.19 W for active gaming in UHD (an average over three PS5 games), 215.7 W in HD, 44.53 W on the home menu and 0.30 W in low-power rest mode. The tables use the UHD gaming figure.
What changes the draw
What the console is doing: gaming draws about five times the home-menu figure on Sony's numbers, and rest mode is close to zero. Sony also lists higher rest-mode figures when the console supplies power to USB ports or stays connected to the internet. A three-game average is a planning figure; individual games may draw more or less. The TV or monitor is a separate load.
No starting surge
A console is electronics with no motor start, so there is no starting figure. Stations rated 100 W or less fail on continuous output; 300 W stations pass.
Reading the tables
Runtime is for gaming at 217.19 W with nothing else connected; the page assumes 3 hours a day, about 652 Wh. Example: the Anker SOLIX C300 record has no maker factor, so the default 0.85 applies: 288 Wh × 0.85 ÷ 217.19 W = 1.1 hours. The EcoFlow DELTA 3 gives 4.0 hours.
Power stations that can run it
Pass = continuous output ≥ 217 W. Runtime = capacity × maker's factor ÷ 217 W, nothing else plugged in. Method.
